Honesty, the best policy

Tue Oct 18, 2005, 10:20 AM
I was driving today, and as usual, deep in thought. I pay dangerously little attention to the road. I drove past a beautiful, big oak tree, nestled in shade. From one of its boughs hung a tire swing, slung low off its branch. The grass grew high, and it lagged in the tall blades. The composition was very, very nice. I thought about stopping to shoot it, because it was very photogenic, and that people would like it. It's something my mother would've liked to have hanging on her wall.

But, then I came to a bit of a realization: I shoot too much stuff that I don't actually like. I've grown a sort of second skin - a scab around my whole self; A sick sarcasm to my photography. I shoot things because I enjoy how predictable people's interests are. I have a fascination with taking images that I hate, that I know others will enjoy; not because I am desperate for some sort of approval, but because I enjoy smirking inwardly at how easily and consistently I can create the sort of images that people like. But it is dishonest and unhealthy.

Take, for example, the following:

It's a great photo. People like it, and I've given prints of it to a few friends. But I don't like it. I don't like it because it's saccharine. It is a very easy photo, and does not invoke the sort of sentiments that I want to explore. It is maudlin, easy-to-like bullshit. And I will not shoot or display such work anymore. So, it comes down in a week, oct. 25. If you want it, get it now, because it will not be there anymore after that.

Due to the many comments/messages received, gallery comments/faves will take the place of actual thank you comments. Please note I appreciate all the support and motivation I receive.

You have some great photos and a good sense of humor, see: badass.

nice gallery. Good works, but a great deal of them are just snapshots. There doesn't seem to be any artistic talent in them to me --> Try to use different filters and manipulate them. They're nice, I have to admit, but they could really use some artsiness if you ask me. :) I adore your sentinels. The beauty of classical architecture captured on film never ceases to amaze me. Beautiful works.

We come to love not by finding a perfect person, but by learning to see an imperfect person perfectly

Hold me tight & tell me you care, and maybe one day you'll really be there.

I dont think you noticed, but I did not ask you for advanced critique on my work. The way my pictures are is the way I want them. They are my photos and are for my judgement only, I'll decide what looks right and what looks wrong thankyou. I put them only up for peoples enjoyment, not for critique.

Thankyou.
:iconmychmclrmnc05:
But why not just point out whats good too, what you do like, even the slightest of things, I don't see you commenting on anything other tahn pictures, why not do poetry or something else, or look at the persons gallary and see what type of artist they are instead of just dissing one of their works instead of looking at a different one and commenting about what you like. or do both, so they know you mean well.

cri·tique Audio pronunciation of "critique" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (kr-tk)
n.

1. A critical review or commentary, especially one dealing with works of art or literature.
2. A critical discussion of a specified topic.
3. The art of criticism.

crit·i·cal Audio pronunciation of "critical" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (krt-kl)
adj.

1. Inclined to judge severely and find fault.

If people have encouraged critique on a piece of artwork then they should expect criticism. If you feel ~shaunkrisher has violated any policy in his critique then please use the correct procedure for reporting him.

Not everyone is _only_ here to showcase their work; some of us want to improve, and welcome comment from their audience. Sometimes we need to detach our ego from our artwork.

[i'm sorry to comment on your page ~shaunkrisher]

are you stalking me?
:iconmychmclrmnc05:
wow those are some nice comments youve left people!! Are you gonna be a monoter and go around correcting everyones art. Its art, it doesn't have to be perfect. Just because 'your the greatest' doesn't mean you have to be soo mean to everyone, Try other arts and such and see how hard they get to be. It needs time and effort for petes sake!! Not ten devations a day geezies!!
